William Barrow Kendall was born 31 January in Salthouse Village. He was educated at Town Bank School, Ulverston. He earned his living as a civil engineer. He was an early member of Barrow Naturalists’ Field Club, (founded 1876) and wrote many articles including the history of Salthouse Village, which is included in the transactions of the society. When James Ramsden first came to Barrow he took lodgings with Kendall’s father. W B Kendall died in Derry, Northern Ireland, in 1919. Biographical notes on this writer can be studied in Cumbria Record Office, Ramsden Square.

 

Harper  Gaythorpe was born in 1850 in Tarporley, Cheshire. His home in Barrow was Claverton, 3 Prospect Road. His works were located at 12 Harrison Street, where he earned his living as an engraver, diesinker and illuminator. He wrote on subjects connected with his favourite studies to newspapers and he gave frequent lectures. His particular interest was natural history and especially in the protection of wild birds. He joined the Barrow Naturalists-Field Club in 1895 and was the president 1902-3. He was also a local historian; one of his better-known works was the history of William Close 1903. Details of his articles can be found in Cumberland and Westmorland Antiquarian and Archaeological Society Transactions New Series Vol 10 1910. Mr Gaythorpe promoted the foundation of a museum at Barrow and was a co-opted member of the Municipal Library and Museum Committee. He died suddenly from angina and pectoris, 27 December, 1909.
